Bespoke fitness centre

Birmingham

To be located in Sutton Coldfield, this fitness centre aims to offer a boutique fitness brand in the setting of a flagship members only gym. The facility is set to be hosted within a modern retail complex in a curved corner plot, and as the building is an empty shell it requires a complete fit out including heating and ventilation, lighting, plumbing, waste disposal and electrics. The design also incorporates the creation of a mezzanine level to accommodate male and female changing areas and a large group fitness resistance training area.

When the design team carried out an initial viewing of the site it was clear the curved layout would present a challenge to the layout and consultation with a structural engineer would be needed to take into account the load bearing and vibration factors in the creation of the mezzanine floor. Building and access regulations also had to be considered which meant a lift area was also needed.

DV Architects created designs for a glass lobby area with a custom made tiled mosaic floor incorporating the gym brand, and this would open into a full height reception space with plush high back seating and a bar area with feature cluster pendant lights. Key clamp window displays would be used in this area to display apparel to be sold on site, while industrial style copper pipes and fittings would create feature directional lighting on the mezzanine floor.

The minimal industrial/urban look is echoed throughout the design with the use of a steel construction staircase with concrete treads, exposed blockwork and pendant lamps and treated and untreated chipboard in several areas. In The Arena resistance training area untreated chipboard is used as branded up cladding in contrast against unusual features including industrial chandeliers and artificial turf, which will be used to create an indoor 80 metre sprint track.

A clever use of lighting will create different ‘zones’ with LED tube lighting set in a pattern to give the spinning studio the feeling of being in a grid formation. Other bespoke features would include the use of iPads in certain workout areas which would operate as jukeboxes, while each area would have its own temperature control with heat and cooling supplied by a combined air conditioning system.

Outside treatment of the building will include the use of two-way glazing allowing people to see into the facility but not to see out, and the use of coloured window frames to echo the coloured zone lighting inside.

Through the clever combination of high end products alongside less expensive materials throughout the site the DV team will deliver an exclusive bespoke feel within a competitive project budget.
