Interior design projects: Lloyds No. 1 Bars, Nottingham

Located on Carlton Street in the popular Hockley area of Nottingham, Lloyds No. 1 bar caters for breakfast, lunchtime and evening diners and drinkers. The site has been occupied for centuries, and was once the site of a mansion before Mr Ichabod Wright moved his bank into part of the mansion around 1860. It remained a bank until closure in 1995 when it became the Lloyds No.1 bar.

As a listed building the brief was to refurbish the interior and increase the number of dining covers which were predominantly still student led. A lot of the surrounding businesses and buildings had started to move into more modern refurbished premises and Lloyds No 1 wanted to refurbish throughout.

The DV Architects team worked to maximise the space in order to increase the number of covers while refreshing the tired interior. This included refreshing the bar area, the furniture, walls and floors, in particular the carpet and dancefloor area which was beyond repair and had to be completely scrapped.

A new timber walkway and new glass racks were also installed to make it easier to serve customers and to decrease waiting times. A bespoke geometric design was also created for the dancefloor from tiled vinyl.

DV architects provided full project management throughout, including working with conservation officers to replace a period fireplace in the newly created ‘snug’, formerly a store room, which was also fitted with booth seating. Works were also made to the staff room and staff changing areas. Overall seating capacity was increased and the project took three weeks to complete.
