The Square Bottle

Chester

This Wetherspoon pub is located in the centre of Chester, just outside the city walls on Foregate Street. The treasure trove of finds unearthed at the Foregate Street site included a rare blue bowl, made of glass, measuring eight inches across at the rim. Two square bottles, with reeded handles, and several flasks were also discovered. A large and well-used bronze key was probably the most notable of the smaller finds.

The Square Bottle is in a good location in Chester, with strong footfall but did not work well operationally. It had a very long bar and customers had to walk to the far end to get served. The challenge to the venue design specialists was to reconfigure what was already there to improve food and beer sales without alienating the existing customers.

DV Architects upgraded the existing bar and extended it to curve around to join a new open gantry food area to promote the restaurant. The new extension enables customers to get served quicker and the open gantry promotes dining, as customers entering the pub now see through to a pristine tiled area where crockery rests under heat lamps.

The new internal refurbishment incorporated decoration, artwork throughout the space and new furniture that would work in groups of two, three or four, and could also come together allowing the space to be used as a banqueting hall. Now everybody orders from the original main barn and then chooses to sit in the refurbished barn.

The Abraham Derby is situated at the popular Merry Hill Shopping Centre. Its location is just outside of the mall, between the car park and the main entrance. The main challenge for our venue design specialists to overcome was that customers were walking past and not feeling invited to go in. It had almost become a blind spot.

DV Architects designed an open gantry food area, where customers will see clean crockery on clean tiles, under heat lamps, as their first impression. The team worked with the existing glazed atrium roof light in the middle of the pub and introduced additional lighting to lighten and brighten the venue, improving its appeal.
