The Winter Seam

Castleford

This pub is part of the Xscape retail and entertainment complex, which also houses a real snow slope, bowling alley, cinema, climbing walls, indoor skydiving and a casino, as well as a number of shops for outdoor gear. Built on the site of Glasshoughton Colliery and Coking Works, the pub takes its name from the winter coal seam worked from the late 1930s until 1969.

The pub was a bit lost in the huge retail and entertainment complex and many people simply didn’t know it was there. It was also seen as more of a night spot than a restaurant because it is open until late and has a dance floor. The challenge was to increase the pub’s appeal as a dining venue during the week and to maintain the weekend nightclub appeal with its dance floor and late opening.

DV Architects created an external signage scheme to attract more customers. The venue design specialists also introduced internal signage and a craft beer display at the entrance to help craft beer sales. The seating was reconfigured to remove the booths and create a larger open plan dining area. A new lighting scheme used feature lights to give the pub more of a restaurant feel and to move away from the disco lights. Following the refurbishment, the pub experienced record food and drink sales.

The new internal refurbishment incorporated decoration, artwork throughout the space and new furniture that would work in groups of two, three or four, and could also come together allowing the space to be used as a banqueting hall. Now everybody orders from the original main barn and then chooses to sit in the refurbished barn.

Brierley Hill

The Abraham Derby is situated at the popular Merry Hill Shopping Centre. Its location is just outside of the mall, between the car park and the main entrance. The main challenge for our venue design specialists to overcome was that customers were walking past and not feeling invited to go in. It had almost become a blind spot.

DV Architects designed an open gantry food area, where customers will see clean crockery on clean tiles, under heat lamps, as their first impression. The team worked with the existing glazed atrium roof light in the middle of the pub and introduced additional lighting to lighten and brighten the venue, improving its appeal.
